In a significant move to strengthen educational ties, the U.S. Mission to Vietnam has partnered with the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training and the Institute of International Education to launch the International Academic Partnership Program. This initiative marks 30 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam.
The program will see more than 40 senior leaders from 21 American universities visit Vietnam for a five-day study tour from March 31 to April 4. The delegation aims to forge new partnerships and enhance academic collaboration with Vietnamese institutions.
Representing public and private institutions across 17 states, these American universities range from research-focused entities to community colleges. Their itinerary includes campus visits, networking events, and meetings with government officials and private sector stakeholders in Vietnam's higher education landscape.
In the academic year 2023/24, over 30,000 Vietnamese students were enrolled in U.S. educational institutions, contributing more than $1 billion to the U.S. economy.
Marc E. Knapper, U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, emphasized the importance of this delegation: “As we celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations, this U.S. higher education delegation in Vietnam is a testament to the United States fulfilling its commitments under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.” He added that expanding educational partnerships is crucial for both nations' success by creating pathways for students and researchers.
Jason Czyz, President of the Institute of International Education, highlighted economic opportunities arising from these partnerships: “Higher education partnerships between the United States and Vietnam offer tremendous, mutually beneficial economic opportunities.”
A statement from the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training noted that "the International Academic Partnership Program in Vietnam marks a bold step in expanding educational ties."
