The U.S. Mission to the Organization of American States (USOAS) has announced its intention to nominate a U.S. candidate for election in June 2025 to serve as Commissioner on the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). The commission, an autonomous human rights organ of the Organization of American States (OAS), will have three vacancies for a four-year term starting in 2026. It comprises seven independent members serving in a personal capacity.
The USOAS is seeking input on potential candidates with the aim of selecting the most qualified and electable individual. The ideal candidate should possess expertise in public international law, international human rights law, and the inter-American human rights system. Additionally, knowledge of Latin America and Caribbean political and social realities is essential.
Candidates are expected to be professionally fluent in Spanish, with proficiency in Portuguese or French being advantageous. They should also have knowledge of U.S. domestic law and how it intersects with international law, along with diplomatic skills and the ability to dedicate sufficient time to IACHR duties.
The selection process involves collaboration with experts from the U.S. Department of State. Submissions must include a statement of interest outlining ideas for tangible reforms to strengthen IACHR operations, along with a current curriculum vitae. Nominations are due by 5 PM EST on Friday, March 14, 2025, at IACHRNominations@state.gov.
