BusinessEurope has issued a call for a comprehensive strategy to enhance women's economic activity in Europe, targeting both employees and entrepreneurs. The organization emphasizes the importance of addressing gender equality as a means to bolster economic growth, innovation, and social cohesion.
Markus J. Beyrer, Director General of BusinessEurope, highlighted the demographic challenges facing the European Union. "By 2100, the EU’s working-age population is expected to decline by nearly 50 million, adding to the pressure on our economic and social systems," he stated. Beyrer pointed out that women could significantly mitigate this issue by increasing Europe's active workforce by 17.3 million people by 2030.
BusinessEurope's approach includes eliminating disincentives within taxation and social protection systems and enhancing childcare infrastructure across Europe. Additionally, it stresses the importance of equipping women with high-demand skills in STEM fields. The post-2025 Gender Equality Strategy of the EU should also focus on advancing women's entrepreneurship and career advancement opportunities.
Gender stereotypes are identified as a major obstacle to achieving gender equality, influencing educational paths and career choices based on traditional gender roles. As International Women's Day approaches, there is a call to action: "Accelerate Action" in dismantling these barriers.
