The United Nations Security Council recently held a briefing on the situation in Yemen, where several key figures provided insights into the ongoing challenges. Special Envoy Hans Grundberg, Under-Secretary-General Tom Fletcher, and Ms. Nesmah Mansoor Ali from the peace track initiative highlighted the persistent threats posed by the Houthis to international peace and security.
The council condemned the death of a World Food Program employee while in Houthi captivity and called for the release of all unjustly detained individuals, including UN staff and NGO workers. In response to these developments, the United States has taken significant steps under President Trump's Executive Order to re-designate the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. The U.S. is also implementing targeted sanctions aimed at cutting off illicit revenues that fund Houthi activities.
A representative stated, "Our sanctions seek to preserve space for legitimate activities that support Yemenis living in Houthi-controlled territory who bear no responsibility for the Houthis’ malign actions." The U.S. also plans to counter Iran's support for Houthi terrorism following directives from President Trump's National Security Presidential Memorandum.
The council emphasized that every UN Member State must adhere to resolutions prohibiting arms provision or related assistance to the Houthis. There was a call for enhanced measures against Iran's violations through its continued arming of the group.
Additionally, there was an appeal for strengthening the UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM) with increased funding and resources to ensure comprehensive inspection capabilities.
Concerns were raised about Hamas advising the Houthis on potential attacks affecting regional stability and global commerce. The representative stressed that member states should not excuse Houthi actions or create false moral equivalencies regarding regional issues.
The humanitarian impact of Houthi obstruction was underscored, particularly their role in exacerbating cholera spread and economic repression within Yemen. Unlawful detentions and sham trials were criticized as affronts to international norms.
In closing remarks, it was reiterated that "the United States will continue to oppose the destabilizing actions of the Houthis" and will respond decisively against any threats to its interests.
