The United States has announced a new visa restriction policy targeting foreign officials and others involved in facilitating illegal migration into the country. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed the policy, which aims to hold accountable those who fail to enforce immigration laws or establish practices that enable illegal immigration through the U.S. southwest border.
Rubio stated, "Securing our nation’s borders is critically important to making America safer, stronger, and more prosperous." He emphasized that countries along migratory routes must actively prevent and deter the transit of individuals seeking to enter the United States illegally.
The policy applies specifically to foreign government officials, including those working in immigration and customs, as well as airport and port authorities. It complements an existing policy expanded in 2024 that targets private sector actors providing transportation services for illegal immigrants.
According to Rubio, these measures will remain in place until responsible officials ensure policies are enforced to stop such transit. He added, "America will not back down when it comes to defending our national security interests."
This action is authorized under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows the Secretary of State to deem any alien inadmissible if their entry could have serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States. The restrictions may also extend to certain family members of those affected.
