Richard H. Riley Ambassador | U.S. Embassy in Somalia

The U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu has issued a security alert for American citizens, citing credible information about potential imminent attacks on multiple locations in Somalia, including Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport. In response to these threats, all movements of U.S. Embassy personnel in Mogadishu have been suspended until further notice.

The U.S. Department of State's level four travel advisory for Somalia remains in effect, warning against travel due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health issues, kidnapping, and piracy. The embassy emphasizes that terrorists continue to plan kidnappings, bombings, and other attacks with little or no warning. Potential targets include airports, seaports, checkpoints, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, shopping areas frequented by Westerners as well as government and military convoys.

"Terrorists may conduct attacks with little or no warning," the embassy stated. Methods of attack could involve car bombs, suicide bombers, individual attackers, and mortar fire.

Due to the lack of a permanent consular presence in Somalia, the U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to its citizens there.

The embassy advises Americans in Somalia to remain vigilant and review personal security plans. Citizens are urged to notify trusted individuals about their travel plans and avoid large crowds or gatherings. It is recommended that they stay alert in areas frequented by tourists and Westerners while being aware of their surroundings and local security developments.
