The United States has imposed sanctions on seven senior members of Ansarallah, also known as the Houthis, for their involvement in smuggling weapons into Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and negotiating weapons procurement deals. The U.S. has also designated a Houthi operative and his company for recruiting Yemeni civilians to fight for Russia in Ukraine, which generated revenue supporting Houthi militant operations. This move follows the State Department's recent announcement designating the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
"We will use all available tools to counter Houthi violence and work with the internationally recognized government of Yemen to eliminate Houthi capabilities," stated Tammy Bruce, Department Spokesperson.
The U.S. government remains committed to holding the Houthis accountable for acquiring weapons and components from suppliers in Russia, China, and Iran that threaten Red Sea security.
Today's action is taken under Executive Order 13224, as amended, and builds on previous measures targeting Houthi weapons procurement operatives and suppliers.
