Protests have erupted in Lilongwe, specifically in Areas 1 and 2, including the bus depot and Old Town. The size and organization of the demonstrators are unclear, but there is a significant risk that the situation could become violent and spread to other parts of the city. In response, the Malawi Defence Force and anti-riot police have been deployed to secure key locations.

Traffic congestion and disruptions are already being reported in the affected areas. Authorities warn that crowds can grow rapidly and potentially turn violent without notice. Tear gas might be used to disperse large gatherings if necessary.

The U.S. Embassy in Lilongwe has issued advice for individuals to avoid demonstration areas, exercise caution near large gatherings or protests, monitor local media for updates, maintain a low profile, and review personal security plans.
