On February 28, U.S. Embassy Jakarta Chargé d’Affaires Heather Merritt attended the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Sunda Strait. The event was held with representatives from the Indonesian, Australian, and U.S. navies, maritime communities, and governments to honor those who fought in World War II. The commemoration particularly focused on the crews of HMAS Perth I and USS Houston (CA-30), which were sunk on March 1, 1942.
Heather Merritt remarked, “Let us never forget the sacrifice of these brave Sailors and Marines,” emphasizing collaboration with regional partners to preserve their legacy and maintain peace.
The ceremony included laying wreaths at Sunda Strait by representatives from the three countries' navies to pay tribute to the fallen sailors. This gesture underscored a commitment to remembrance and camaraderie that continues to influence regional cooperation.
The event highlighted ongoing cooperation between the United States, Australia, and Indonesia in ensuring peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region amid challenges like maritime security and heritage site protection.
U.S. Naval Attaché to Indonesia CDR Patrick Panjeti stated, “We do not gather here today to glorify war but rather to remember the cost of war.” He emphasized the United States' commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region for safe passage and peace.
The Battle of Sunda Strait resulted in significant loss with 696 American sailors and marines killed near Java's coast. Survivors continued resisting during captivity across several regions until returning home after the war as heroes. The USS Houston Survivors Association has annually commemorated this history since 1945 in Houston, Texas.
