The World Health Organization (WHO), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and World Trade Organization (WTO) recently conducted their first joint briefing for officials based in Geneva. The event emphasized the importance of an integrated approach to health, intellectual property (IP), and trade issues, which is a central aspect of the collaboration among these three organizations.
During the meeting, governments and policymakers discussed the challenge of finding suitable policy options to promote sustainable innovation. The discussions aimed to support domestic and regional policy dialogues through a coherent and comprehensive approach.
Participants from various regions shared their experiences in implementing laws and policies that foster sustainable innovation ecosystems. These discussions were followed by a roundtable session and were further enriched with information provided by WHO, WIPO, and WTO on their trilateral efforts and other related initiatives.
The meeting also introduced the WHO-WIPO-WTO Technical Assistance Platform. This platform enables members to request joint technical assistance from the three organizations, providing coordinated expertise at the intersection of health, trade, and IP.
The Trilateral Briefing series consists of closed meetings designed for members. The next session for Geneva-based health, IP, and trade attachés is tentatively planned for September 2025.
