The U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, in collaboration with the Field of Skills and Dreams VTE Academy, has initiated the Emerging Technicians Conference. This program aims to equip young Nigerian technicians with essential skills and knowledge for excelling in their trades and establishing sustainable businesses.
A total of 120 emerging technicians from various technical fields such as plumbing, electrical work, automobile mechanics, HVAC systems, solar systems design and installation, data science, and web development were selected for a six-month mentorship program.
The conference was designed to enhance entrepreneurial skills by providing insights into evolving technical fields' landscapes. It emphasized continuous skill development and innovation's role in career success. Participants had opportunities to network with industry professionals and gained practical knowledge on business management, branding and marketing, customer service, and basic accounting processes to improve future financing access and scale their businesses.
Acting U.S. Consul General JoEllen Gorg delivered opening remarks at the American Corner Ikeja. She highlighted the U.S. Mission’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and supporting small businesses in Nigeria.
“Technicians and artisans are vital to a thriving economy,” Acting Consul General Gorg said. “By providing entrepreneurship training, resources, and networking opportunities, we are championing high-quality craftsmanship and empowering the next generation of technicians to thrive in an ever-changing job market.”
U.S. Consulate General Facilities Manager Cynthia Gwaro joined industry leaders like Dr. Christiana Okenla from Equinix West Africa; Zansi Adebowale from Daikin; sharing expertise with participants on building successful businesses.
Omowale Ogunrinde of Field of Skills and Dreams VTE Academy stressed aligning technical workforce training with technological advancements: “This initiative invests in one of Nigeria’s most valuable resources—its youth,” Ogunrinde said.
Participant Khadijat Ajagbe expressed appreciation for the program: “The Emerging Technicians Conference has equipped me with essential business and technical skills... Learning from experienced professionals has been truly impactful,” Ajagbe added.
In coming weeks participants will continue working with Field of Skills & Dreams VTE Academy using newfound skills towards further honing crafts contributing towards Nigeria's long-term economic growth & development.
