U.S.-Botswana partnership bolsters energy security through expert engagement

The U.S. Embassy in Botswana is reinforcing its commitment to energy security, emphasizing a collaborative approach that aims to benefit both the United States and Botswana. From February 24 to 27, the embassy is hosting Dr. Lawrence E. Jones, a specialist in sustainable energy, smart grids, and infrastructure. Dr. Jones will engage with Botswana's private sector and energy professionals to address significant energy topics and examine collaboration opportunities.

Dr. Jones will also participate in the SADC Sustainable Energy Week, where he is scheduled to present on "Green Hydrogen: Pathway to a Sustainable and Resilient Energy Future in the SADC Region" at 8 a.m. on Thursday at the Grand Palm.

With over 25 years of experience in the energy field, Dr. Lawrence E. Jones currently holds the position of Vice President of International Programs at the Edison Electric Institute (EEI). His responsibilities include leading strategic initiatives such as the Global Electricity Forum and the Africa Utility Power Sector Exchange. Prior to his role at EEI, he was North America VP for Utility Innovation & Infrastructure Resilience at Alstom Grid Inc., collaborating with global utilities on technological advancements and business solutions.

Dr. Jones has been involved in various advisory roles including serving on the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee. He is also affiliated with several organizations such as being a Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and Chairing the 21st Century Power Partnerships Public-Private Leadership Forum.

In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Jones received awards like the 2017 Global Excellence Award in Renewable Energy and holds membership as a Senior Member of IEEE. He co-authored "Renewable Energy Integration: Practical Management of Variability, Uncertainty, and Flexibility in Power Grids."
