The World Bank has introduced a new photobook titled "Shades of Libya: Contrasts, Hope, and Resilience" in Tripoli. The publication highlights Libya's diverse landscapes, culture, and the resilience of its people through the lens of young Libyan photographers. An exhibition showcasing this work is being held from February 20 to February 27, 2025, at 'Housh al Saboun' or the "Tripoli House of Art and Crafts" in Tripoli's Old Town.
This photobook complements an earlier World Bank publication, "The Long Road to Inclusive Institutions in Libya: A Sourcebook of Challenges and Needs," released in 2023. While global narratives often emphasize Libya's political instability and conflict, this new book seeks to present a broader perspective on the country's diversity and potential.
Ahmadou Moustapha Ndiaye, Country Director for the Maghreb and Malta at the World Bank, commented on the significance of the collection: "Shades of Libya: Contrasts, Hope, and Resilience is a poignant collection of images and stories featuring the contrast within Libya – from its stunning natural beauty to the strength of its people amidst socio-economic challenges." He emphasized that it aims to provide insight into Libya's journey towards a promising future.
The photobook addresses development challenges and opportunities across various socio-economic sectors crucial for shaping Libya's future. Written in both Arabic and English, it focuses on resilience and hope while acknowledging ongoing instability. The World Bank has supported Libya for over two decades through technical assistance and analytics aimed at economic recovery and institution building. It also aids Libyan institutions with social protection as well as water and energy sector reforms. "Shades of Libya" highlights these efforts by illustrating pathways for growth and prosperity.
