The U.S. Department of State has launched an updated version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service designed to keep U.S. citizens informed while traveling or living abroad. The new version, introduced in late 2024, allows users to customize their subscriptions through a login.gov account and receive location-specific email alerts during their chosen timeframe.

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) urges all U.S. citizens residing in Taiwan or traveling internationally to enroll or re-enroll in the updated STEP system, as previous enrollments do not automatically transfer. Users can manage multiple trips or locations and modify their subscriptions at any time.

To take advantage of the updated features, individuals are encouraged to visit step.state.gov, set preferences, and continue receiving alerts from AIT or the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. The program aims to provide real-time updates on health, weather, safety, and security at destinations worldwide.

The STEP service sends various types of messages: routine news updates about selected destinations; alerts regarding short-term security issues like terrorism, health concerns, weather events, or disasters; and travel advisories that include a rating system and detailed risk information for each location.

For assistance, travelers can contact the American Institute in Taiwan via phone numbers provided for Taipei and Kaohsiung or visit their website. Additionally, they can reach out to the State Department's Consular Affairs for further support.
