The United States has expressed its support for the Philippines following a recent incident involving the Chinese People's Liberation Army-Navy (PLAN). A Chinese helicopter reportedly came within three meters of a Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Resources plane near Scarborough Reef, posing a risk to the aircraft and its crew. This event is part of ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, where similar actions have been reported.
Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated, "The United States stands with its ally the Philippines to condemn the unsafe and irresponsible actions by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLAN) to interfere with a Philippine maritime air operation in the vicinity of Scarborough Reef."
This occurrence comes shortly after another incident on February 11, when China allegedly endangered an Australian aircraft during a routine maritime patrol in the same region. The U.S. considers such maneuvers by China as threats to navigation and overflight freedom in these international waters.
Bruce further emphasized, "Reckless Chinese actions such as these are a threat to navigation and overflight in the South China Sea, and we will continue to support our allies and partners to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific." She urged China "to refrain from coercive actions and settle its disputes peacefully in accordance with international law."
The United States-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty of 1951 covers armed attacks on Philippine forces or public vessels anywhere in the South China Sea, highlighting the significance of this alliance amid rising regional tensions.
