The United States has expressed support for the Philippines following an incident involving the Chinese People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLAN) near Scarborough Reef. A statement from Tammy Bruce, a Department Spokesperson, condemned what was described as "unsafe and irresponsible actions" by a Chinese helicopter that came within three meters of a Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Resources plane. The aircraft was conducting a routine overflight at the time.

This encounter is part of ongoing tensions in the region. It follows another reported incident on February 11, where China allegedly performed an unsafe maneuver that endangered an Australian aircraft engaged in maritime patrols in the South China Sea.

"Reckless Chinese actions such as these are a threat to navigation and overflight in the South China Sea," said Bruce. The United States reiterated its commitment to supporting allies and partners to maintain a "free and open Indo-Pacific."

The statement also urged China to resolve disputes peacefully and adhere to international law, highlighting concerns about coercive actions in the region.

The press release further noted that the 1951 United States-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty covers armed attacks on Philippine forces, vessels, or aircraft anywhere in the South China Sea.
