Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken engaged in a conversation with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty to address various issues concerning the Middle East. According to Spokesperson Matthew Miller, they emphasized the urgency for Lebanese leaders to resolve the presidential vacancy in Lebanon. Additionally, they discussed the United States' recent commitment of nearly $157 million in humanitarian aid for Lebanon and reiterated support for Lebanese state institutions, including the Lebanese Armed Forces.
The dialogue also covered the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which aims to allow civilians in Israel and Lebanon to return home safely. Secretary Blinken expressed gratitude towards Egypt's efforts in negotiating a ceasefire in Gaza that would ensure hostages' release and acknowledged Egypt's role in resolving Sudan's conflict.
Further discussions touched on human rights improvements following their previous U.S.-Egypt Strategic Dialogue meeting. They also addressed Egypt’s water security needs and the significance of the Nile River for Egyptians.
