The Sun Life Pentathlon des neiges, Canada's largest outdoor winter event, has commenced its 21st season on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City. The event runs from February 14 to February 23, 2025, with a focus on accessibility and participation.
Dominic Drolet, Director General of Groupe Pentathlon, expressed gratitude towards the contributors of the event. "We are extremely grateful to our partners, volunteers and participants who contribute each year to the success of the Sun Life Pentathlon des neiges," he said. He highlighted the refrigerated skating rink as a feature that ensures an exceptional experience regardless of weather conditions.
Robert Dumas, President and CEO of Sun Life in Quebec, announced the renewal of their title partnership for two more years. "The 21st Sun Life Pentathlon des neiges is sure to be another spectacular event. Our employees, customers and partners are highly motivated as 11 Sun Life teams vie to excel on the Plains of Abraham," he stated.
Alex Harvey, spokesperson for the event, emphasized its role in promoting an active lifestyle. "I am proud to be taking part in the Sun Life Pentathlon des neiges and to support this unique event that brings together thousands of winter sports enthusiasts," he added.
The program includes activities such as cycling, snowshoeing, skating, cross-country skiing, and running challenges. Participants can join solo or in teams. New features this year include the Initiation Challenge for beginners and an Extra Long Distance Team Challenge covering nearly 75 km across all five sports.
Several public figures will participate in various challenges including athletes Cindy Ouellet and Catriona Le May Doan; actors Patrice Godin and Patrick Hivon; animator Frédéric Plante; Member of Parliament Jean-Yves Duclos; and Mayor Bruno Marchand.
Jean-Yves Duclos announced government support for the event over three years with $165,000 funding aimed at promoting it nationally and internationally. Isabelle Charest praised participants' commitment to physical activity while Jonatan Julien highlighted its contribution to regional economic vitality.
Bruno Marchand invited residents to enjoy winter sports at the Plains during the event period. "People from Quebec City... come and get some fresh air on the Plains!" he encouraged.
The Pentathlon des neiges began in Lac-Beauport in 2005 before moving to Quebec City's Plains of Abraham in 2008. It is organized by Groupe Pentathlon with a mission to create impactful sports events that enrich experiences.
