Less than a month remains before Lesotho's national elections, marking the first scheduled elections in nearly a decade. This event is considered significant for the nation. The United States has expressed support for Lesotho's aim to conduct elections that are free, fair, transparent, and devoid of violence.
Ambassador Maria Brewer issued a statement addressing various groups within the country. To political leaders and candidates, she emphasized restraint from inflammatory rhetoric and discouraged any acts of intimidation. "Violence has no place in a democratic election," Brewer stated.
She also addressed media outlets, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders involved in informing the public and advocating for their interests. She highlighted the importance of their work during this period: "Your work is as important as ever – please keep it up!"
Furthermore, Ambassador Brewer encouraged eligible voters to participate in the upcoming elections by casting their ballots. She underscored that democracy functions effectively only with active participation from its citizens.
