The Organization of American States (OAS) has adopted a resolution addressing the recent situation in Venezuela. The resolution was discussed at the OAS Permanent Council, where Ambassador Francisco O. Mora, the Permanent Representative of the United States to the OAS, delivered remarks highlighting concerns over the Venezuelan electoral process.
Mora emphasized that "the July 28 election in Venezuela, and the events of the weeks since, demand a timely and clear response from this institution." He cited reports of repression, violence, and human rights violations in Venezuela following these elections. Mora called for transparency and accountability from Venezuela's National Electoral Council regarding election results.
The resolution reaffirms the OAS's commitment to democracy and human rights across its member states. It urges Venezuela's National Electoral Council to release detailed election results and uphold democratic principles. Mora stressed that transparency is essential to maintaining confidence in electoral outcomes: "They deserve to know the true outcome of their votes—an outcome that reflects their collective voice, free from manipulation."
The resolution received support from several countries within North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. It emphasizes unity among these nations in upholding democracy and human rights within the hemisphere.
The document also highlights previous agreements made by Venezuelan political parties regarding political rights and electoral guarantees. The OAS calls on all involved parties in Venezuela to maintain peace and respect for human rights while resolving any disputes related to the electoral process.
Panama clarified its stance through a footnote stating its recognition of candidate Edmundo González's victory but supports multilateral actions for ensuring respect for suffrage.
Mora concluded by commending "the good faith negotiations" that led to adopting this resolution as a demonstration of unity among OAS member states.
