Ambassador Francisco O. Mora recently spoke at an event commemorating the March on Washington, emphasizing the enduring relevance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s advocacy for racial equality and dignity. Mora highlighted King's connections across the Americas, noting that King wrote significant speeches during visits to countries such as the Bahamas.

Mora acknowledged ongoing challenges with discrimination in the United States, stating, "My government acknowledges that systemic racism and white supremacy are ugly poisons that have long plagued the United States." He emphasized America's commitment to promoting racial justice and equity domestically and internationally.

The ambassador mentioned President Biden's efforts to build a diverse federal government, including appointing Desirée Cormier-Smith as the first Special Representative for Racial Equity and Justice. Mora also recognized civil society's role in addressing injustices.

Highlighting historical injustices like slavery and systemic racism, Mora urged open dialogue to realize America's promise: "The long shadows of slavery, Jim Crow, and redlining — and the blight of systemic racism that still diminishes our nation today — hold America back from reaching its full promise."

He advocated for honoring those who were enslaved by recognizing contributions made by people of African descent. As Frederick Douglass once said, “Without a struggle, there can be no progress.” Mora stressed that achieving racial equity requires a sustained effort across generations.

Mora concluded by acknowledging Bayard Rustin's contribution as chief organizer of the March on Washington. He called for continued dedication to justice and equality: "It is a call Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made to us all and even now, 60 years later, it is a call we must all strive to achieve in all our countries."
