The U.S. Embassy in Belgrade has announced the opening of applications for the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program for the 2023-24 academic year. The program, supported by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education, is a competitive opportunity available to Serbian citizens aiming to enhance their leadership skills and contribute to society upon their return.

Since its inception in 1978, over 6,000 fellows from 162 countries have participated in the program, including 20 Serbians in the past decade. "If you are interested in broadening your perspectives, becoming a global leader, and giving back to Serbian society upon your return, the Humphrey Fellowship is for you," states the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Embassy.

The fellowship targets young, mid-career professionals with leadership potential and a commitment to public service. It offers non-degree graduate-level study, leadership development, networking opportunities, and professional collaboration with American counterparts through practical work experience.

Applicants must be Serbian citizens eligible for a U.S. visa and possess an undergraduate degree with at least five years of full-time professional experience by June 2023. They should also demonstrate leadership qualities and proficiency in English.

Fields covered by the fellowship include economic development, public policy analysis, technology policy and management, law and human rights, agricultural development, environmental policy, urban planning, public health policy, higher education administration among others.

"The freedom from requirements necessary to obtain a degree gives each Fellow greater flexibility to pursue a self-directed program," explains the embassy. Fellows will engage in various enrichment activities such as conferences and site visits while developing detailed plans for practical professional activities.

Applications are due by June 30, 2022. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed at the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade in September 2022 before final selections are made in Washington D.C., February 2023.

The fellowship covers travel expenses and provides a stipend but does not fund dependents' costs. Candidates planning to bring family members must ensure they have sufficient personal funds for living expenses and health insurance.
