Access to electricity is crucial for countries like Madagascar, where it can transform lives and boost economic growth. The Least-Cost Electricity Access Development (LEAD) Project, funded by the World Bank, aims to connect 200,000 households to electricity by June 2025 through a network densification initiative called Branchement Mora.

Andriamparany Fiononana, a student from Andranomanelatra, shared his experience of studying under candlelight before his home was connected to electricity. His mother, Marie Lydia Rasahondramalala, noted the challenges they faced without proper lighting. Her husband, Falimanana Randrianjakazafy, expressed relief at having their courtyard lit up at night.

Herilanto Rasoloniaina, a hairdresser in Andranomanelatra, has seen an increase in customers since connecting to the JIRAMA network. "Since I've had electricity, I get twice as many customers," he said.

The LEAD Project makes connections affordable by reducing costs from 500,000 ariary ($106) to 30,000 ariary ($6). It also funds the extension of the JIRAMA network with plans to install 1,500 kilometers of new lines nationwide.

Xavier Rakotozafy from JIRAMA explained that "1,000 villages across Madagascar will benefit" from this project. In Anosimboahangy village, residents eagerly await connection as infrastructure nears completion. Madame Herilala Ranivoarisoa assured villagers that their requests would be processed swiftly.

Komenan Koffi of the World Bank highlighted challenges such as poverty and low population density but emphasized that the LEAD Project addresses these issues through network expansion and densification efforts.

The LEAD Project aligns with Mission 300's goal of connecting 300 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030 while supporting Madagascar's objectives for job creation and economic growth.
