The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) for the 2023/24 academic year is now accepting applications. The program, which is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, offers scholarships to a diverse group of emerging student leaders for one semester of non-degree academic study at a U.S. college or university.
The program aims to attract participants from underrepresented backgrounds who have not previously had opportunities to study in the United States. Participants will gain exposure to U.S. society, culture, and academic institutions while enhancing their professional skills. All academic fields are eligible for the program, although certain restrictions apply to students in clinical fields such as medicine and nursing due to J-1 visa regulations.
Participants will be placed at a U.S. university either in the fall 2023 semester or spring 2024 semester. The scholarship covers various expenses including international travel, tuition, room and board, medical insurance, required books, and a small monthly stipend. Students will engage in full-time undergraduate coursework and are required to enroll in courses related to their major as well as a course in U.S. Studies.
The program includes community service activities and requires participants to live with American peers on campus. Orientations will be conducted before departure, upon arrival virtually, and during an in-person symposium in Washington D.C.
Eligibility criteria include citizenship and residency requirements specific to the applicant's country, current enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student with good standing at an accredited university, leadership potential demonstrated through various activities, command of English language skills, and age above 18 years.
Preference is given to applicants with little or no experience in the United States or abroad. Individuals currently residing outside their home country or employed by U.S missions abroad are not eligible.
Applicants should prepare their documents promptly due to the application deadline on December 15, 2022. For further information or inquiries about the application process, interested individuals can contact BelgradeG-UGRAD@state.gov.
