The U.S. Mission in Greece has issued an alert to American citizens regarding ongoing seismic activity near the Greek islands of Amorgos, Santorini (Thira), Anafi, and Ios. According to local authorities, more than 200 earthquakes have been detected in the area, with some reaching magnitudes of up to 4.5.
The U.S. Mission advises citizens to exercise caution in these affected regions. In response to the increased seismic activity, the Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has provided guidance for residents and visitors on Amorgos, Santorini (Thira), Anafi, and Ios. They recommend avoiding large indoor gatherings and steering clear of old or abandoned buildings.
Furthermore, the ministry advises against visiting the ports of Amoudi, Armeni, Korfos, and Old Port (Paleos Limenas) around Fira. Travelers are encouraged to select safe routes, especially in areas prone to landslides. In case of a strong tremor, it is advised that individuals immediately leave coastal areas.
U.S. citizens residing or traveling near these locations should adhere to instructions from local authorities and keep informed through local media and emergency alerts. Official information from the Greek Ministry includes resources like Protection Guidelines for Earthquakes and Civil Protection Announcements available in Greek.
Actions recommended by the U.S. Mission include following all announcements from the Greek government, registering with Greece’s Emergency Communications Service for warnings via SMS or email if not using a smartphone, calling 112 for emergency assistance, monitoring local media updates, confirming transportation service operations with providers such as airlines or cruise ships, carrying identity documents at all times, having a contingency plan for emergencies as per the Traveler’s Checklist guidelines, and enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for embassy alerts.
