President Joe Biden has expressed approval of a recent agreement aimed at securing the release of hostages held by Hamas following an attack on Israel on October 7th. He stated, "I welcome the deal to secure the release of hostages taken by the terrorist group Hamas during its brutal assault against Israel on October 7th."
The President and First Lady Jill Biden have been deeply concerned for those affected, with Biden noting, "Jill and I have been keeping all those held hostage and their loved ones close to our hearts these many weeks." He conveyed relief that some individuals will soon be reunited with their families.
Biden acknowledged the roles of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani of Qatar and President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt in reaching this agreement. He also commended Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's government for supporting an extended pause to ensure successful implementation of the deal and provision of humanitarian aid in Gaza.
The President emphasized his commitment to American safety abroad: "As President, I have no higher priority than ensuring the safety of Americans held hostage around the world." He highlighted efforts made since Hamas's attack to secure hostage releases, mentioning two Americans freed in late October as part of these efforts.
Biden concluded by recognizing the dedication within the U.S. Government that contributed to today's agreement, describing it as a testament to diplomacy and determination.
