President Pellegrini, Deputy Prime Minister Kalinak, Deputy Prime Minister Kmec, Minister Blanar, General Zmeko, General Stohler, General Doyle, and other distinguished guests gathered to mark the arrival of Slovakia's first F-16 fighter jets. The event was attended by U.S. Ambassador Rana who emphasized the significance of this acquisition for Slovakia's defense capabilities.
"Tonight, with our Slovak Allies, the United States celebrates the arrival of Slovakia’s first F-16 fighter jets," said Ambassador Rana. She highlighted that the purchase of fourteen F-16 aircraft would provide vital air defense capabilities for Slovakia in the coming decades. The F-16 Block 70 model is described as "the most modern model of the F-16 jet fighter," making it a significant addition to the Slovak Air Force.
Ambassador Rana noted that this investment marks a historic military modernization effort for Slovakia. It will enhance both self-defense capabilities and NATO defense goals at a crucial time in NATO's history. She mentioned that these jets would help deter threats from Russia and integrate Slovakia more fully within NATO's defensive framework on Europe's Eastern Flank.
The process to acquire these aircraft began in 2018 under President Pellegrini's administration. Ambassador Rana commended both President Pellegrini and Prime Minister Fico for their roles in anchoring Slovakia within NATO through this acquisition.
Lockheed Martin and various Slovak and American officials were acknowledged for overcoming challenges during negotiations, including those posed by the Covid pandemic. Former U.S. Ambassador Adam Sterling and his team were specifically noted for their contributions.
The ceremony also recognized the efforts of pilots who flew directly from Greenville, South Carolina to deliver the aircraft. The Indiana National Guard played an integral role throughout this process as part of its State Partnership Program with Slovakia.
"This year marks the 30th anniversary of the State Partnership Program between Slovakia and Indiana," said Ambassador Rana, highlighting one pilot from Indiana who delivered a jet as part of this commitment.
In closing remarks, Ambassador Rana congratulated Slovakia on its 20th anniversary of joining NATO and the EU while emphasizing shared values and collective defense commitments between nations.
"Dakujem velmi pekne [Thank you so much]. And long live the partnership and friendship between the United States of America and the Slovak Republic."
