The Department of State has introduced a new version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) as of September 16, 2024. This revamped platform allows U.S. citizens to use a login.gov account for customizing subscriptions and receiving country-specific email alerts during their chosen timeframe.
The updated system enables users to enroll multiple trips or locations simultaneously and offers flexibility in modifying subscriptions or unenrolling at any time. The STEP program is designed to facilitate contact between travelers and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate during emergencies, providing safety and security alerts.
"We strongly encourage all U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad to enroll or re-enroll today to take advantage of new functionality," stated the Department of State.
For those interested, enrollment can be completed by visiting state.gov, where preferences can be set to receive alerts from nearby embassies or consulates. Additionally, travelers are encouraged to inform friends and family about enrolling in STEP for both individual trips and long-term stays in specific countries.
To stay informed, following the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs on social media (@travelgov) and connecting with local U.S. embassies or consulates is recommended.
