Confirming voter registration with your state is the first step for participating in the 2024 General Election Primaries. Some states require absentee voters to register annually, so re-registration may be necessary. Voters can visit FVAP.gov to connect to their state's voter portal for registration and ballot requests.

Most states offer ballot requests through state election portals accessible via FVAP.gov. Alternatively, voters can complete a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA), which allows them to request absentee ballots for all federal elections within the calendar year of submission. Correctly filled FPCA forms with a signature and date are accepted by all local election officials across U.S. states and territories. FVAP's online assistant can help complete the FPCA.

Voters are encouraged to select electronic ballot receipt options when available, as this ensures faster delivery abroad, allowing time for return before state deadlines.

Ballots are sent out by states 45 days before regular federal elections and generally at least 30 days before primary elections. Most states provide online confirmation of ballot delivery.

Returning completed ballots varies by state; some allow electronic returns while others require mail. For paper returns, options include international mail, professional courier services, or using the U.S. Embassy Bratislava’s diplomatic pouch service, which offers free mail service from embassies to a U.S. sorting facility. Ballots should be placed in postage-paid envelopes or envelopes with sufficient U.S. postage.
