Applications for the KfW Award Urban Living 2025 are open until March 17, 2025. This marks the second occasion that KfW Group will distribute these awards, aimed at recognizing innovative and sustainable projects within municipalities.

KfW Group has introduced this award to acknowledge pioneering projects in response to challenges posed by climate change, digitalization, and demographic shifts. "Germany has already made fantastic progress in this area," a statement noted, emphasizing the need for future-proof solutions.

Eligible participants include municipalities of any size and municipally-owned enterprises. Projects should enhance living quality through integration, innovation, affordability, and sustainability. The objective is to inspire future municipal initiatives by showcasing successful examples.

Awards will be given in categories such as “Energy and Heating Transition,” “Digital Education,” and “Affordable and Space-Efficient Housing.” A special prize titled “Living Inclusion – Disabled Sports Unites Municipalities” is also available in partnership with the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS).

The category “Energy and Heating Transition” targets projects that have made urban areas more climate-friendly. In contrast, “Affordable and Space-efficient Housing” focuses on efficient living spaces. The “Digital Education” category highlights successful digital training initiatives.

The special prize acknowledges efforts towards including disabled individuals in sports activities. "The invitation to submit applications is issued in cooperation with the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS)," according to the release.

A total of EUR 40,000 will be awarded across all categories. First-place winners receive EUR 5,000 each; second-place winners get EUR 3,000; third-place winners receive EUR 2,000. Prize money goes to a non-profit chosen by the winning municipality.

A jury of experts from each category will select winners. Jury details are expected in February 2025.

Winning projects will be celebrated on June 2, 2025, during the German Municipal Congress in Berlin organized by the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB). The TV channel n-tv serves as media partner for this event.
