Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, issued a statement on January 26, 2025, in observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This day is designated by the United Nations to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27, 1945. The camp was the largest Nazi concentration and death camp.
In his statement, Rubio said, "We solemnly remember the six million Jews who were systematically murdered across Europe by the Nazis and their collaborators, as well as the millions of others who were killed." He also emphasized honoring those who survived and expressed gratitude to those who liberated them. Rubio highlighted a renewed commitment to human freedom and justice.
This year holds particular significance as it marks 80 years since World War II and the Holocaust ended. Rubio noted that it might be one of the last opportunities for survivors to share their firsthand experiences. He stated, "As Secretary of State, I will continue my unwavering commitment to support Holocaust survivors and their heirs, just as I did in the United States Senate."
