The World Bank has approved a $75 million Second Health Sectors Programmatic Development Policy Loan for Bosnia and Herzegovina. This initiative marks the second phase in a series aimed at bolstering the financial sustainability of the nation's healthcare system while enhancing service quality.

The program is designed to enact policies that improve the financial stability of health institutions. It focuses on addressing existing arrears in the health sector and establishing governance measures to prevent new ones. Additionally, it includes strategies for improving health service delivery and preventive care, as well as reforms to enhance environmental management and tobacco control.

Christopher Sheldon, World Bank Country Manager for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, emphasized the importance of this investment. "As we face an aging population and increasing fiscal pressures, investing in people's well-being is crucial for the benefit of the entire economy," he stated. "This program is a step forward in helping Bosnia and Herzegovina deliver better healthcare to its citizens. It also reaffirms our commitment to improving the quality of life and economic stability in the country."

This program complements an ongoing Health Systems Improvement Project funded by the World Bank, benefiting from technical assistance provided by various development partners to strengthen health sectors.

The active World Bank portfolio in Bosnia and Herzegovina includes eight projects with a total value of $475.30 million. These projects support not only healthcare but also employment, agriculture, local infrastructure, and environmental initiatives.
