Prime Minister Amarasuriya, Minister Handunnetti, Deputy Minister Chathuranga, and Chairperson Jayasuriya were among the attendees at the Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association Annual General Meeting held on January 27, 2025. Ambassador Chung addressed the gathering at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo.
Ambassador Chung congratulated Rajitha Jayasuriya for becoming the first woman chair of the association. The ambassador highlighted the significant role of Sri Lanka's apparel industry in global trade and its contribution to nearly half of Sri Lanka’s export revenue. "The apparel industry, with its focus on ingenuity, creativity, and adaptability, plays a vital role in driving the global economy," she stated.
She drew parallels between successful companies like Nike and MAS Holdings to emphasize how innovation and determination can lead to global success. Referring to Nike's humble beginnings in 1964 and its growth into a $100 billion company, she said it exemplifies "the power of determination, innovation, and commitment."
Chung also paid tribute to Martin Trust for his contributions to the apparel industry both in Sri Lanka and globally. She noted that MAS Holdings has invested back into the United States by establishing a design-to-delivery hub in Asheboro, North Carolina.
Highlighting U.S.-Sri Lanka partnerships as essential for prosperity and growth in both nations' apparel industries, Chung said: "The journey of companies like Nike and MAS remind us that success... is driven by a blend of creativity, resilience, and innovation."
She pointed out that investing in U.S. operations could offer benefits such as reduced shipping times and lower tariffs while emphasizing America's openness to business under President Trump's administration. "Last week President Trump took office... I want to really underscore that the United States is open for business," she mentioned.
Ambassador Chung encouraged transparency and good governance from Sri Lanka's new government as it establishes trade priorities. She emphasized that these factors are crucial for attracting foreign investment.
In conclusion, she remarked on Sri Lanka’s leadership potential within quality manufacturing practices globally while affirming continued partnership with the United States: "Together we can drive economic growth... setting new standards for excellence on the global stage."
