The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa has issued an alert to American citizens regarding protests taking place outside embassy installations on January 28, 2025. The embassy advises U.S. citizens to remain indoors and avoid movement within the city.

Reports indicate that roadblocks, small fires, and large crowds throwing rocks and attacking vehicles are present throughout Kinshasa. Citizens should expect additional police checkpoints and increased traffic.

The embassy urges Americans to maintain a low profile and limit their movements as even peaceful demonstrations can escalate quickly. It is advised to avoid gatherings.

On January 28, the Consular Section will be closed to the public, with all appointments canceled. Rescheduling instructions will be provided via email and phone calls for those affected.

In case of emergency assistance needs, contact the Consular Section using the after-hours phone numbers provided.

U.S. citizens are reminded of the potential for demonstrations to become violent without warning and are advised to steer clear of large gatherings, protests, and impacted areas. Other recommended actions include avoiding crowds, being aware of surroundings, monitoring local media for updates, reviewing personal security plans, ensuring adequate food and water supplies at home for several days if needed, and keeping a low profile.
