The U.S. Department of State, through a press statement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, acknowledged International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, 2025. This day is designated by the United Nations to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945, which was the largest Nazi concentration and death camp.
"We commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day," said Secretary Rubio. "We solemnly remember the six million Jews who were systematically murdered across Europe by the Nazis and their collaborators, as well as the millions of others who were killed. We honor those who survived, thank the liberators, and renew our shared commitment to human freedom and justice."
This year signifies 80 years since World War II ended and the Holocaust occurred. It may be among the final opportunities for survivors to share firsthand accounts of their experiences during this tragic period.
"As Secretary of State," Rubio continued, "I will continue my unwavering commitment to support Holocaust survivors and their heirs, just as I did in the United States Senate."
The statement underscores a renewed dedication to remembering those lost and supporting survivors' stories and legacies.
