Erin Sawyer assumes new role at U.S. Embassy Reykjavik

A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Erin Sawyer has taken on the role of Chargé d’Affaires ai at the U.S. Embassy in Reykjavik, Iceland as of January 2025. She had been serving as Deputy Chief of Mission since her arrival in Iceland in December 2022.

Sawyer's recent assignments involved providing strategic foreign policy advice and assessments to the Commander and senior leadership of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Africa. Additionally, she managed civilian security assistance programs across Europe and Asia.

Her career highlights include leading a division at the Department of State’s Office of the Geographer, where she analyzed complex humanitarian emergencies through maps and data visualization. She also worked with the Multinational Force and Observers in Sinai, Egypt. Her overseas postings have included assignments at U.S. Embassies in Laos, France, and Germany, along with short-term assignments in Thailand and the Central African Republic.

Before joining the Foreign Service, Sawyer was an attorney in San Francisco representing venture capital funds and technology companies at various stages of development. She holds an M.S. in National Security Strategy from National War College; a J.D./M.A. from Stanford University; and a B.A. from Swarthmore College. Sawyer is fluent in French and German and is a member of the California Bar Association.

Sawyer is married to Carol Brooke, who works as a senior career advisor for the State Department’s Global Employment Initiative. They are accompanied by their Irish Terriers, Hugo and Freya, while they occasionally see their three grown children.
