On April 25, Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer visited Colombia to lead the U.S. delegation at an international conference on Venezuela. During his visit, Finer held discussions with Colombian President Gustavo Petro and other officials, including Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva and Chief of Staff Laura Sarabia. These meetings were a continuation of talks from a recent bilateral meeting between President Biden and President Petro in Washington.
At the conference, Finer emphasized the United States' commitment to supporting the Venezuelan people. He stated that the U.S. would work with international partners to restore democracy and rule of law in Venezuela, enabling its citizens to rebuild their lives. Finer presented a strategy involving concrete steps towards democratic restoration in Venezuela, which would be reciprocated by sanctions relief from the United States.
Finer was joined by Special Presidential Advisor for the Americas Chris Dodd, National Security Council Senior Director for Western Hemisphere Affairs Juan Gonzalez, and State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Mark Wells.
