In June 2025, the American Film Showcase (AFS) is set to host twelve documentary filmmakers for a comprehensive workshop at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) in Los Angeles. This program offers an all-expenses-paid, 10-day intensive on documentary development and pitching.

The workshop targets filmmakers working on their first or second feature-length documentaries. Participants will benefit from SCA's expertise and resources. The selected individuals are expected to share their newfound knowledge with filmmaking communities in their home countries.

The event includes a multi-day development workshop led by esteemed SCA faculty. Filmmakers will work on story structure and character development, concluding with a pitch session to industry professionals within the American documentary sector. Afterward, participants gain access to additional opportunities through AFS alumni networks.

Applications are due by January 28, 2025, close of business. Selection is based on project quality, personal statements, media examples, and interviews. AFS seeks applicants who reflect the diversity of its member countries while aligning with the program’s mission.

Filmmaker requirements include proficient English skills, a personal statement up to 400 words, a description of current projects in various stages, a CV emphasizing documentary experience, and links to relevant works-in-progress or completed projects.

Submissions should be sent to NyathiB@state.gov by January 28 COB. Queries can be directed to NyathiB@state.gov with Archer-KnepperR@state.gov copied.

Projects must present an artistic approach distinct from typical public service announcements or branded content. AFS prefers projects that are either personal narratives connected to the filmmaker or stories pertinent to their communities.

Important dates include:

- Submission Deadline: January 28

- Shortlist Announcement: February 28

- Zoom Interviews: March 10-21

- Final Decision: March 24

Participants are scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles on June 7 and depart on June 20 after completing the program from June 8-19.
