Joanie Simon has taken on the position of Acting Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Iceland as of January 2025. Before this role, she was the Political and Economic Affairs Chief from August 2023. Her previous experience includes serving as the U.S. Consul in Nuuk, Greenland, from 2021 to 2023.
Simon has worked overseas to enhance U.S. business, investment, and energy relations with Vietnam while stationed at the U.S. Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City. She also held the position of Chief of Staff at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul between 2017 and 2018 and served in Beijing.
In Washington D.C., Simon contributed to the Executive Secretariat under both Secretary Kerry and Secretary Tillerson. She was involved with the office of the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan and worked on trade and investment issues on the India Desk.
Simon holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Santa Clara University. Raised in Gig Harbor, Washington, and northern California, she is proficient in Danish, Swedish, and Mandarin Chinese. She is accompanied by her two dogs, Saamik and Ragnar.
