The U.S. State Department has expressed significant concern over the condition of Ukrainian parliamentarian and former military pilot Nadiya Savchenko, who is reportedly gravely ill following her detention by Russia. According to reports, Savchenko has been on a hunger strike since December 13th to protest her detention terms. She was captured in June 2014 by Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine and subsequently transferred to Russia. "We call on Russia to immediately release Ms. Savchenko and all other Ukrainian hostages as well as fulfill all commitments it made under Minsk," the statement reads.
In discussions about new sanctions against Russia by the European Union, questions arose regarding Greece's stance. The new Greek government, led by Minister Tsipras, has raised objections to these sanctions, as reported in a conversation with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini. Jen Psaki from the State Department commented on this issue: "These are deliberations that are happening within the EU... We appreciate the cooperation of our European partners in implementing the sanctions adopted by the EU."
When asked if there is concern that Russia might influence Greece away from EU unity regarding Ukraine and sanctions, Psaki noted that the Greek government is newly formed and expected to engage with various countries. "There have been in the past... debates or discussions about what is beneficial or not on EU sanctions leading up to decisions that are made," she stated.
Regarding any direct contact between U.S. officials and Greece's new leadership, Psaki mentioned that Secretary of State John Kerry had been traveling extensively without indicating specific plans for communication with Greece at this time.
Additionally, when questioned about potential issues due to Greece's opposition to sanctions against Russia, Psaki responded: "I don’t want to speak on behalf of Greece... There are often discussions and debates leading up to the EU decisions about sanctions."
A separate query was raised concerning a proposal by Russian parliamentarians considering a resolution condemning Germany's reunification. Psaki indicated no official comment yet but would consult further with their European team.
