The NATO Secretary-General has condemned the recent escalation of violence in eastern Ukraine, attributing it to Russia-backed separatists. The violence has resulted in significant civilian casualties, including thirty deaths and approximately one hundred injuries from an attack on Mariupol. This attack was reportedly launched from areas controlled by separatists supported by Russia.
NATO has criticized these actions as "unjustified and unacceptable" and claims they contradict the Minsk agreements. Despite Russia's repeated commitments to a peaceful resolution, NATO accuses Russia of continuing to support the separatists with training, equipment, and forces. In recent weeks, NATO reports that Russia has supplied advanced equipment such as rocket systems, tanks, and electronic warfare systems to the separatists.
NATO calls on Russia to cease its support for the separatists and respect its international commitments. It urges all parties involved to work towards a peaceful solution in line with the Minsk agreements. The organization reaffirms that Ukraine's independence is crucial for security in the Euro-Atlantic area.
During a press briefing, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg addressed questions regarding potential new aid for Ukraine and allegations made by President Putin about a NATO legion fighting in Ukraine. Stoltenberg stated that "there is no NATO legion" in Ukraine; instead, he emphasized that Russian forces are present there supporting the separatists with substantial military equipment.
Stoltenberg noted that NATO supports Ukraine through practical means like defense reform and medical aid for wounded soldiers. Additionally, economic sanctions against Russia are backed by NATO members alongside discussions with EU officials about possible increased sanctions.
In response to queries about attacks on Mariupol and potential motivations behind them, Stoltenberg refrained from speculation but reiterated that Russian-backed separatists are violating ceasefire agreements. He stressed the importance of economic sanctions as a consequence for violating international law.
NATO maintains its commitment to supporting Ukraine's sovereignty within internationally recognized borders.
