Marco Rubio was officially sworn in as the new Secretary of State during a ceremony held at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C. on January 21, 2025. Vice President Vance presided over the event, highlighting Rubio's journey from humble beginnings as the son of Cuban immigrants to becoming a key figure in American politics.
Vice President Vance praised Rubio's dedication and ability to work across party lines. "He is a bipartisan solutions-seeker, a guy who can actually get things done," said Vance. He also acknowledged Rubio's understanding of President Trump's foreign policy priorities, which represent a shift from previous approaches.
The Vice President expressed gratitude to President Trump for nominating Rubio and acknowledged Senator Jim Risch for facilitating the swift confirmation process. "This is the first time I’ve ever sworn in an official of the United States Government," said Vance.
Rubio thanked his family for their support and emphasized their importance in his life. He also expressed appreciation for Senator Risch's friendship and collaboration during their time together in the Senate.
In his remarks, Secretary Rubio outlined the administration's foreign policy focus under President Trump, stating that every action must be justified by whether it makes America stronger, safer, or more prosperous. "President Trump has made it very clear everything we do...must be justified by the answer to one of three questions: Does it make us stronger, does it make us safer, and does it make us more prosperous?" said Rubio.
Rubio concluded by expressing gratitude to God and acknowledging the responsibility that comes with his new role. "We will work hard every second of the day to help him achieve the agenda the American people have given him to achieve," he stated.
The ceremony marked a significant moment as Marco Rubio takes on his new responsibilities as Secretary of State under President Trump's administration.
