The United States has expressed its support for the Inter-American Development Bank's new Framework aimed at assisting populations in fragile situations. This was announced during a Peacebuilding Commission meeting, which also featured insights from representatives of Guatemala, Honduras, and Ecuador.
Ambassador Danese convened the meeting where USG Rider and ASG Spehar shared their comments. The U.S. acknowledged Mr. Ilan Goldfajn, President of the Inter-American Development Bank, for his presentation on the Framework. The Framework addresses issues of fragility, conflict, and criminal violence affecting Latin America and the Caribbean.
The United States highlighted the importance of international financial institutions as "agents for peace" and welcomed the emphasis on knowledge sharing within the Framework. It called for collaboration among donors, multilateral development banks, and the UN to better understand different contexts.
The U.S. also appreciated the focus on adaptable approaches tailored to specific regions experiencing fragility. It advocated for joint programming in affected areas with an emphasis on infrastructure, governance, and social resilience to foster peace.
Furthermore, it recommended prioritizing locally-led mechanisms as effective strategies within programs under this new Framework.
Concluding their statement, the United States commended progress made by the international community in adopting strategic approaches towards conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts.
