Water plays a crucial role in fostering peace and is essential for various aspects of life, including food security, climate adaptation, clean energy transition, and health. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield highlighted the importance of access to safe water and sanitation on World Water Day.

Many people worldwide, particularly in conflict zones and areas severely affected by the climate crisis, lack access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities. This situation can lead to heightened tensions between communities and perpetuate poverty and inequality. Sustainable water management is critical for achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals related to health, education, gender equality, and economic growth.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield announced at the 2023 United Nations Water Conference that the United States has committed over $49 billion toward equitable, climate-resilient water and sanitation investments both domestically and globally as part of its commitments to the Water Action Agenda.

On World Water Day, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield urged intensified efforts to ensure universal access to safe water and sanitation. She emphasized that "together, we can build a more sustainable and equitable future for all, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive."
