The United States has announced an additional $18 million in humanitarian assistance to address the ongoing crisis in eastern Ukraine. This aid aims to support over five million people affected by the conflict, including 1.2 million internally displaced individuals. Vulnerable groups such as single-headed households, the disabled, and the elderly are of particular concern.
There is a pressing need for increased access to those in need and improved freedom of movement for civilians. The U.S. government has urged all parties involved in the conflict, including Ukraine, Russia, and Russian-backed separatists, to facilitate safe passage for civilians across ceasefire lines. Furthermore, there is a call for full implementation of the February Minsk implementation plan to ensure international humanitarian organizations can deliver aid without obstruction.
The funding will be channeled through several organizations: the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). These funds will address critical needs such as food, hygiene items, medical supplies, and essential household goods like blankets and construction materials. Additionally, efforts will focus on preventing gender-based violence and enhancing healthcare access.
