The United States has expressed its appreciation for the collaboration with El Salvador during the Universal Periodic Review. The session took place on January 20, 2025, and highlighted joint efforts in areas such as economic development, countering transnational crime, and improving conditions in detention facilities.
Despite these positive aspects, the U.S. voiced concerns regarding the legal rights of individuals detained under El Salvador's State of Exception. The statement emphasized that these detainees should have access to fair trial guarantees and full legal protections.
In response to these concerns, the U.S. made several recommendations to El Salvador. These include facilitating communication between detainees and their families and legal counsel, ensuring timely trials with effective legal representation for all detainees, and implementing policies to support the social and economic integration of vulnerable children and youth in El Salvador.
The statement concluded with a note of thanks from the U.S. representative.
