Catherine Russell, the U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, is currently in Cairo to engage with Egyptian women leaders across various sectors including business, government, and civil society. Her visit spans two days from January 31 to February 1.
"Egypt is making progress on issues like education, women’s participation in politics, and entrepreneurship," stated Ambassador Russell. She expressed her eagerness to witness this progress firsthand and learn about Egypt's future plans for advancing women's rights.
During her stay, Ambassador Russell will address topics such as economic inclusion, political involvement, education and health for young women, and gender-based violence. Additionally, she will conduct meetings with UN Women and the Arab League.
Ambassador Russell heads the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues at the U.S. Department of State. In this role since August 2013, she has been instrumental in leading efforts to combat gender-based violence globally, empower women economically, promote women's roles in peace and security initiatives, and enhance educational opportunities for adolescent girls. Before taking on this position, she was Deputy Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden.
