The 2025 presidential election in Belarus is facing criticism from the United States due to the current repressive environment in the country. According to U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, the Lukashenka regime's systematic efforts to silence dissent have predetermined the election outcome before any votes are cast. This situation deprives Belarusians of their right to choose their leaders and shape their future.
"The United States joins many of our European allies in assessing that elections cannot be credible in an environment where censorship is ubiquitous and independent media outlets no longer exist," stated Blinken. He emphasized that only regime-approved candidates are allowed on the ballot, while opposition members face imprisonment or exile.
Furthermore, Blinken pointed out that the regime's failure to invite the OSCE to observe the upcoming election highlights its disregard for a transparent electoral process and its obligations as an OSCE participating state. "The United States condemns the Lukashenka regime’s campaign of repression and its attempts to legitimize an election that cannot be free or fair," he added.
Blinken remarked that repression indicates weakness rather than strength, noting that measures taken by the Lukashenka regime suggest it fears its own people. Despite these challenges, he acknowledged the impact of Belarusians' bravery both inside and outside the country.
"The United States recognizes the extraordinary perseverance of Belarusian individuals and civil society organizations working to hold the regime accountable," said Blinken. The U.S. continues to advocate for nearly 1,300 political prisoners still detained in Belarus and stands with Belarusians demanding transparency, democracy, and freedom.
