U.S. Ambassador Stephen Beecroft and Luxor Governor Mohamed Badr attended a groundbreaking ceremony on March 6 for the expansion of Luxor's wastewater treatment plant. The project aims to nearly double the plant's capacity, benefiting residents of Luxor and El Bayadeya.

"Effective treatment of wastewater is essential to protecting public health and ensuring a clean environment," stated Ambassador Beecroft. "The expansion of this treatment plant helps those who depend on the Nile for clean water and supports the health and livelihood of the people of Egypt."

The expansion is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with the Luxor Potable Water and Sanitation Company. It is designed to enhance wastewater treatment capabilities to accommodate projected population growth over the next twenty years.

Since 1978, USAID has invested almost $30 billion in Egypt, with over $3.5 billion allocated to constructing or upgrading water and wastewater facilities that serve more than 25 million Egyptians.
