Members of the United States House of Representatives, Michael Conaway (R-TX), Ralph Abraham (R-LA), and Gwen Graham (D-FL), visited Egypt from October 16 to 18, 2016. During their visit, they met with senior officials from the Government of Egypt and toured projects supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
The delegation held discussions with Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry and Minister of Defense Sedki Sobhi. These talks focused on shared interests in regional security, stability, and economic development.
As part of their visit, the representatives toured the Giza plateau. They visited a groundwater lowering project at the Sphinx, which was developed in coordination with the Ministry of Antiquities. This USAID project aims to protect the historical monument from damage caused by excessive groundwater.
Additionally, the delegation met with representatives from the World Food Programme (WFP) and Syrian refugees. The discussions centered on WFP food distribution programs. The United States government has contributed USD 37 million through USAID to support Syrian refugees in Egypt.
